Injectable PrEP roll out: a milestone in HIV prevention by the NHS

October 21, 2025 4:23 pm

Published by Vanessa Giorgo

The NHS is rolling out the first long-acting injectable form of HIV prevention, cabotegravir. This will be a “transformative step” in the fight to end new HIV transmissions in England by 2030.

PrEP drugs, which stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis, can prevent people who are HIV-negative from acquiring the virus. If a person is exposed to it, the injection works by blocking an enzyme called integrase, which HIV needs to make copies of itself. This stops the virus from multiplying in the body and becoming an established infection.

This injection will be available only for people who cannot swallow tablets, and its effects will last for two months. The treatment will be provided by sexual health clinics across the country. Around 1,000 people will benefit from this long-lasting injection.

Joel Robinson, Spectra CEO, says:

“This is a landmark moment for HIV prevention in the UK. Long-acting injectable PrEP offers a vital alternative for people who face challenges with taking daily medication – whether due to unstable housing, stigma, or complex health needs. At Spectra, we see firsthand how structural inequalities limit access to HIV prevention. This rollout must be matched with inclusive outreach, culturally competent care, and investment in community-led services to ensure no one is left behind. We urge NHS England to work closely with grassroots organisations to ensure this breakthrough reaches those most at risk, including trans communities, migrants, and people of colour disproportionately affected by HIV”

Spectra continue to advocate for equitable access to sexual health services. We will be working with partners to raise awareness of injectable PrEP options across London and beyond.

For more information about the treatment and whether you’re eligible, speak to your local clinician or come find us at any of our upcoming outreach sessions.
