Spectra has joined a coalition of organisations in signing an open letter, led by Decrim Now, calling on the UK Government to take urgent action to address the growing link between poverty and s@x work.
The letter, addressed to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and the Chancellor, highlights how the ongoing cost-of-living crisis is pushing more people—particularly women—into sex work as a means of survival. According to Decrim Now’s recent survey, 76% of respondents said financial need was the main reason they entered s@x work.
Spectra supports the call for a social security system that is fit for purpose – one that enables people to meet their essential needs and live with dignity. The letter urges the Government to use the upcoming Autumn Budget to strengthen support for those most affected by poverty in meeting their essential needs and living with dignity.
As an organisation committed to health equity and support, Spectra stands in solidarity with s@x workers and advocates for policies that prioritise safety, dignity, and human rights.
