What it offers
The ALEX project has been created BY SWers, FOR SWers. ALEX stands for Advocate with Lived EXperience. We work with current or former sex workers who are based in the UK.
As current and former SWers ourselves, we understand how problematic it can be using services run by people outside of the community. Stigma, privacy issues, and a desire to ‘save’ us from our work are just some of the things we can come up against, whilst trying to access basic things like healthcare and supplies. By asking to speak to ALEX when making contact with a Spectra service, you will be directed to a member of the SW community.

Casework
Casework – also called advocacy – is where you have an initial assessment with someone from the ALEX team and make an agreement with them about how they will help you to achieve your goals.
We will only do what you ask us to do and will work alongside you to explore your options and contribute to actions that you prioritise.
Casework is confidential and practical support, around a variety of issues. The caseworker will need to ask you for some personal details, as we have a duty of care towards you.
This kind of support can be useful for:
- Getting you registered with and referring you to other services
- Supporting applications for housing or benefits
- Assistance when you have difficult tasks to do
- Accompanying you to appointments
- Making action plans and having regular check-ins with you
If there is a legal issue you need support with, we can't provide legal advice, but we can connect you to resources, including trustworthy lawyers who are allies. Our casework would provide you with ongoing support through this process.

Ask4Alex is a codeword you can use to request health and safety services specifically for sex workers. We have ALEX team members who can translate into Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin. Other staff can also provide Tagalog translations.
